Bain-Marie Heating Elements: Straight, M-Type and Bottom-Outlet Explained

A bain-marie keeps buffet food hot in a water bath. Its heating element sits in or under the water well, so scale and leaks are the main enemies. This guide explains the common element shapes we supply.

  4. Read the voltage and wattage from the element or the machine plate.

Care tips

  • Keep the water level above the element at all times.
  • Descale regularly, especially in hard-water areas.
  • Replace seals when you replace the element.

Frequently asked questions

What does bottom outlet mean?

It describes where the element terminals leave the water well: through the bottom of the tank instead of the side.

Why is my bain-marie not heating?

The element, thermostat or wiring may have failed. Scale build-up on the element can also reduce performance.

Can I run a bain-marie dry?

No. Running without water burns out the element quickly.
